2021/12/01
12月18日にオープンキャンパスが対面で開催されます。英語コミュニケーション専攻では、「Introducing Shinjuku」と題して体験授業を行います。
Most of us have been to Shinjuku many times, but how much do we know about it? What do you like to do in Shinjuku? Could you introduce Shinjuku in English? In this class, we will look at the history of Shinjuku, from its beginning in the Edo period, to becoming a new center point for modern Tokyo.
The original name of Shinjuku is Naitō-Shinjuku. Naitō was the family name of a daimyo whose house was in the area. His land is now the Shinjuku Gyoen park. The area developed as a new (shin) lodging area (juku) on the Kōshū Kaidō highway from 1698. It is now an important “second center” of modern day Tokyo, with a major train station.
We will start by exploring Shinjuku in the Edo period. Then we will take a look at some old maps and photographs and see how the area developed into the city it is today. We will look at the station, restaurants, shops and department stores and see how they have changed over time. This class will give you a lot of ideas for introducing places in Japan in English.
