2013年度 海外研修速報 No. 2

今回は、海外研修に同行している国際文化学科の杉長ジャッキー先生が、第1週目の学生たちの学校での様子を英語で詳しく報告します。

Week one of the 2-week study abroad program in Brisbane

The first week of the study abroad program at Langports language school in Brisbane, went smoothly and finished successfully. All of our 22 Komajo students enjoyed their first week of studying new things, eating new foods, making new friends and spending quality time with their host family. To follow is a snapshot of some things the students did and learned throughout the week.

First day of class

On the first day of class many of the students came to school looking a bit nervous and uncertain, but after the first day and certainly by the end of the week they were all smiling, talking a lot more in English and generally feeling more confident and happy with themselves.

On the first day, after the students had their photographs taken to make their ID cards, they were given a guided tour of the school as well as Brisbane city center.

Then we all boarded a small ferry to take us across the river to the cultural South Bank where we enjoyed a rainforest walk, a short stroll beside a man-made beach area, and we also got to see where the performing arts shows are usually held.

Interactive learning

The students were separated into two groups with different teachers and studied different things. Both classes seemed to be interactive and students had many opportunities to talk and communicate with each other. During the week in class, the students learned a lot about Australian culture, climate, food, wildlife and much more. They also did some research at home and the following day in class everyone did a pair presentation on Australian animals.

Of course, it wasn’t all just study for the students; they also had some breaks in between classes where they followed the Langports ‘Only English’ policy. This, I could see was challenging for some of the students at first, but as each day went on, they became more and more willing and comfortable to use English. I hope the second week will be as good as the first as the students continue to challenge themselves to not only learn, but ‘use’ English and enjoy more new experiences along the way.
